Please, men are not the cause of rape! I see some issues with this article
- I have known several men who had been sexually violated in childhood and it is MUCH harder for male victims to speak up and get help.
- Men are victimized by rape culture too. A young boy can be preyed upon by an older woman but our culture would make him feel like this was a good thing even though he most likely didn’t enjoy the experience and would be traumatized just like a young woman who is preyed upon by an older man.
- People who violate the sexual boundaries of others typically are angry and have serious emotional issues but this does not mean that alcohol doesn’t play a role. Alcohol numbs feelings and makes it easier to objectify others. People who commit crimes while drunk are offenders and alcoholics for they indulge in unmanageable behavior while drunk.
- I am a woman whose past includes sexual trauma at the hands of predatory men. I believe this is a complex issue and I don’t believe that it happens because of some ‘bad’ men. Just like boys who witness domestic violence are more likely to repeat the behavior in adulthood, rapists can be acting out their own past traumas. Perpetrators can also possibly have been victims in past situations.
- In my recovery work from sexual trauma I have gotten to know many people who have trouble being sexual even in normal relationships without drugs and alcohol. Alcohol acts as a barrier to intimacy and makes sexual situations more palatable to those who are are afraid to be vulnerable
